What if your daily habits how you eat, sleep, move, and manage stress were the most powerful tools for improving your health?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this idea is foundational. It is known as Yang Sheng, commonly translated as “nourishing life.” Rather than focusing only on treating illness, Yang Sheng emphasizes cultivating health proactively through intentional daily living.

What Is Yang Sheng?

Yang Sheng is a holistic approach to preserving health, preventing disease, and supporting vitality across the lifespan. It is not a single therapy, but a way of living that aligns daily habits with the body’s natural rhythms.

Traditionally, Yang Sheng includes both broad guiding principles and more specific lifestyle practices—often described through the Nine Principles of Nourishing Life.

The Three Core Foundations of Yang Sheng

Before exploring the nine principles, it’s helpful to understand the three foundational ideas that guide Yang Sheng:

1. Avoid What Causes Harm

This includes reducing behaviors that negatively affect the body, mind, or spirit, such as:

  • Poor diet

  • Chronic stress

  • Overwork and lack of rest

  • Environmental exposures

2. Cultivate Health-Promoting Habits

Health is built through consistency:

  • Regular meals

  • Balanced nutrition

  • Sleep hygiene

  • Emotional regulation

3. Engage in Practices That Regulate the System

Activities that promote internal balance include:

  • Qi Gong

  • Tai Chi

  • Yoga

  • Meditation

These practices support the smooth flow of Qi and help regulate the nervous system (Deadman, 2022).
